Hello Everyone!
Been a little caught
up with everything else in life and haven’t blogged for a little while. I have
missed ranting about how evil the media is and am happy to report that even
though I wasn’t writing, I was still scrutinizing every magazine and TV show on
a regular basis. By now, noticing what’s wrong with everything I see has became
more natural to me than enjoying the entertainment and I must admit, I may have
ruined some fun for myself.
So, feeling a little lonely and lost, I have set on a
journey to find my social bookmarking soul mate. I wanted to find someone who
shared my interests and thoughts, and someone who understood the importance of
questioning what other people just gladly accept.
On my quest to find
my Internet life partner, I came across a website/tool called Diigo, which
helps you bookmark and tag any websites you find useful. Some of the tags I
have been using include ‘stereotype’, ‘gender’, and ‘media’. Typing these
search items into the search box gives you a ton of websites and articles that
relates to your search and it also shows you other users who have bookmarked
similar things or used similar tags.
After stalking a ton of users who have bookmarked using the tag media, I
finally came across my perfect soul mate.
My social
bookmarking soul mate’s name is Debra Beck and she is a very avid user of Diigo.
On her profile, she described herself as follow:
“Wyoming-based adult educator
interested in using technology to facilitate effective learning experiences in
a variety of settings. Eclectic interests with strong emphasis on adult
learning, distance-delivered education, social media, and nonprofit issues
(with dogs and photography mixed in).
I use Diigo because It's an
essential part of my personal learning network. It allows me to capture,
categorize and share resources. It also helps me to connect with, and learn
from, others with similar interests.”
Ms. Beck has a very impressive record of 11325 public
bookmarks and hundreds of tags. Her top
tags include ‘nonprofit’, ‘learning’, ‘social media’ and more importantly, she
has tags that match mine such as ‘media’, ‘gender’, ‘feminism’ and
‘stereotypes’. Her interests seemed
similar to mine and from her list of tags, I gathered that she is also
interested in the topic of how the media creates stereotypes and affects people
negatively. Ms. Beck has been a user of
Diigo since 2010 and has gained 22 followers and is a part of 6 public groups. Though
the last time she used the tag media was in March 2012, I still find a lot of
the sites she bookmarked to be relevant today and are very useful to my
research.
One of my favorite
resources I found via Ms. Beck is www.socialmediatoday.com. The website hosts an online community for
professionals in the PR, marketing and all social media related fields to
inform and update about the way social media is changing the way companies
communicate with consumers. I find this
website helpful because I work for a PR firm and nowadays social media is the
key to successful marketing. Another website I found useful through her is www.thedailybeast.com. This website is
dedicated to eliminate the problem of information overload that most news
websites face and gives concise and sharp commentary on all the breaking news.
This website could be useful for anyone who wants to obtain a lot of current
events going on in a short period of time since it eliminates any irrelevant
detail and only gives you the key points.
It really was an
exciting moment finding my social bookmarking soul mate. I realized that I am not
alone in my rant about media’s contribution to gender stereotype and have
learned a lot of other information through her bookmarks about PR and social
media in general that helps me with work. Thank you Ms. Beck for all your help
even though we’ve never met. I have just became your 23rd follower
on Diigo. =)
